Every baby is different. I go into every session not knowing exactly how easy or tough a babe will be to work with. Will they prefer to be shushed to sleep, be bounced side to side, or maybe they prefer to have their bottom patted while I rock them. Within a few minutes I can typically pin point what baby will be soothed by. Even when there’s a stretch of awake time, and there almost always is, I know that at some point they will sleep for me. There is always an exception though…

Going into today’s newborn session with Brody, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Let me share a little story with you. A story about the one and only time I had to cut a newborn session short. I can’t even believe I’m admitting I had to do that, but I’m keepin’ real!  Brody’s big brother Easton was not interested in sleeping for me. He was not interested in anything but cuddling with his mama. I can work with an awake and calm baby. Awake and fussy/crying… no dice. I managed maybe 15 images from the few set-ups I was able to do.

I really had to remind myself what I tell all my clients; every baby is different. Brody proved this to be true. He had the typical awake time at the beginning of the session, but after a second bottle fell right asleep. Oh my, what a great sleeper. He was a bit particular about which poses he liked, but I figured it out and did my best to keep him happy. The result, and over abundance of gorgeous newborn photos. I cannot wait to share the rest of this session, but for now here’s a peek…

In-studio maternity sessions are a favorite session of mine to do. Each kind of session I love for different reasons I suppose. It feels like most sessions are a favorite for certain reasons. I love newborn sessions because I get to cuddle sweet babies and capture them at their smallest. The 6-8 month age is one of the funnest because of how friendly babies typically are at this age. They’re also usually sitting up, but not yet crawling. In other words they can’t crawl/run away from me!  I’ve been doing more and more family sessions the past year also. Watching your family play, laugh, cuddle and love on each other is amazing. I try to capture the moments you might have at home, just being yourselves. All my sessions fill my heart for different reasons.

I love in-studio maternity sessions because I feel they give me the opportunity to play with my creative side a bit further than other sessions do. I feel most inspired during these sessions. Playing with fabrics and wraps, wind and light. I want each mama-to-be to feel amazing. Not every pregnant mama feels as radiant and beautiful as they look. I try to capture them in a way that they’re able to see themselves for how everyone else sees them already.

This mama was nothing short of gorgeous. Her confidence radiated through every photo. Below are some of my favorites. I have an obsession with backlighting. If you’ve seen any of my other matenrity work I’m sure that’s pretty obvious. There’s just something about it. The way the light touches each belly, giving the most gentle and ethereal feel to each image.

It’s that time of year again. Everyone has finally gotten into the swing of Summer, and is starting to think about having family and baby photos done while it’s still warm. I mean this is Minnesota, it’ll be snowing in about 5 minutes. I’m sure of it.

The warm weather means my schedule fills up a little quicker than usual. In any given month I might be booked up only two or three weeks in advance. When it’s warm out, my sessions book much faster. I typically schedule 2-3 baby/family/maternity sessions each Saturday (giving myself a weekend off once every three or four weeks),  and I schedule newborn sessions during the week. Right now, my schedule for Saturdays are full through mid October, with the exception of  1 opening in September. That may sound crazy, but like I mentioned we don’t have this gorgeous weather for very long in Minnesota, so I only book family sessions from the end of May through end of October. Sometimes we get lucky and will get a great Saturday in the 50’s in November, and then you can usually talk me into a November outdoor session.

I also don’t like to take on more than five newborn sessions per month. I never know when a baby will be born, and with only a couple weekdays available for newborn sessions, I have to make sure I can get all those newborns photographed before they get too old. And by “old” I mean 14 days or older 🙂 While I rarely have to turn down a newborn session because my schedule is already full, I foresee this happening over the next 6 months.  I already have at least 2 newborns scheduled for everyone between now and January. I’ve had an absolutely crazy amount of inquiries the past few weeks, and it just doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Not a bad thing at all! But, it can be for you if you wait too long to contact me about scheduling your session. I absolutely hate saying “No” to inquiries, but in order to keep some sort of work-life balance I have to.

So this is my long winded warning. If you’ve been thinking about schedule a session but haven’t because you’ve been busy with other things, don’t put it off for another minute. Click the Contact link on my menu bar and send me an email.
