Minneapolis Maternity Photographer

The maternity session. Not a session that every expecting mommy can see herself doing. I think my maternity clients are pretty brave. I admire their ability to step in front of a camera with confidence when many would feel anything but photogenic. I sure wouldn’t have felt comfortable having photos taken of me when I was pregnant with my daughter.  I was a walking water balloon. I gained so much water weight when I was pregnant with her, I mean it was just ridiculous. I had that super creepy pitting edema  in my feet. Cute was the last thing I felt.

With my son, I still gained weight of course, but I felt more comfortable. I’m lucky to have a great friend who did my maternity photos for me. I love, cherish, adore them. It made me realize… while I may not have felt super confident in my first pregnancy, I wish I had taken maternity photos. What I looked like didn’t matter. Why I love capturing maternity photos for clients, and why I should have had them done for me, is to capture all the emotions during this brief time in life. The anticipation, anxiety, and excitement of a new beginning. You’ve never met your baby, have yet to see their precious smile, yet you love them unconditionally. Just imagine for a moment, 10, 15, 20+ years from now showing your child these photos. How crazy special will that be?! My oldest, Azria, has already started asking for me to tell stories of when she was in my belly. I have a few photos to share with her, and my gosh does it make her so happy. That’s what it’s all about.  If you’re thinking about having maternity photos done for yourself, just do it. I promise, you won’t regret it.

If you’ve had a newborn session with me, you know that before your session I make sure we talk on the phone about your session. I like to make sure you  have a good idea in your mind of exactly what will happen at your session. It’s also important that you know exactly how to prepare. A lot of this information can be found on my Newborn Session Details page also.

At the end of our call I like to talk about styling for your session. I prefer to use mostly neutral colors… browns, creams, greys; with the occasional bit of color. To me, neutral tones are timeless, and flattering for almost any skin tone. These gentle colors keep the focus on baby. I always ask clients for input into their session. If you have a certain color you would like me to incorporate, or maybe one that you want me to avoid using. And I also ask about poses too… if you have a favorite, or even one you don’t like.

While I welcome some input into the styling of your session, I think my absolute favorite response is none. That you want me to do whatever I’m inspired to do, because you love my work and trust me. Seriously, it makes my day. And I’m lucky that almost all my sessions are like that.

Mr. Carter’s session is an example of a session that I had full control of styling and planning. I was able to easily select poses, props, blankets and hats that would work together cohesively.  It was also hugely helpful that he was a very sleepy little babe for me 🙂 I love these photos soooo much, and I hope you enjoy them as well!

Let’s just take a moment to acknowledge how insanely cool this little guy’s name is. A favorite falling right behind my own kid’s names. I love love LOVE unique baby names. But let’s be clear, there is a line between unique and weird. Names along the line of Pirate or Banjo…. no, just no. And people, those are REAL names that parents have named their children. Not kidding.

This marks my second newborn session with this awesome family.  Lil’ Sabrina just turned two in May. It’s crazy how fast time has gone by. It’s so surreal to me to have some of my clients from my first couple years in business coming back with new little ones. This month alone I have 3 returning clients due with babies! And last week I had 3 other clients book newborn sessions this year. It is so humbling that these amazing people not only hired me for their first child’s newborn photos, but are coming back for their next child too. I mean, I don’t even know how to explain what that feels like. I started this business 3 1/2 years ago with the thought that I might be able to have this little business as a side job on the weekends for fun. I fell in love with it. I love cuddling with newborns and capturing all their littleness. How they curl up, so tiny and delicate. All the smallest details, baby toes being my favorite. A baby just beginning to sit up on their own, and the sweet smiles they give not yet afraid of strangers. Some of the first steps taken, still wobbly. And the special moments your family share playing and loving each other. I am blessed and thankful for the journey the last few years has brought me, and I can’t wait to see what’s yet to come.

Meet my new favorite summer shooting location. Lush greenery, check. Pond, check. Weeping willow, check!!!!! Love this so much. At sunset the golden rays of sun just peek through the tree branches and leaves. Absolutely gorgeous. I technically found this spot last summer, but couldn’t figure out how to get clients here without a 10-15 minute walk along a busy road. Don’t get me wrong, I thought about it. I even started toying with the idea of hiring someone to shuttle me and clients back and forth from the nearest parking lot. Yes, I realized that would be totally crazy (and sort of brilliant). But anyway, I sort of gave up on it.

After the weather warmed up this year I started thinking about this spot again. Thanks to my friend Google Earth, I found a semi-hidden, small parking area on the other side of the area I had discovered last summer. VICTORY!!!!!! No but seriously, I may have cried some happy tears and done one epic happy dance when I realized I could shoot here after all. I’m not ashamed, and you would have too.

This was my second evening shooting here, and I look forward to coming back many times this summer. I’m especially excited to do my next maternity session here. I have some seriously gorgeous ideas!!! So if you or someone you know has been thinking about having maternity photos done soon, call me! There is one major drawback to this sweet spot. Quite possibly the most annoying insect on the planet, also know as the state bird here in MN, mosquitoes. We hosed ourselves in repellent, but they were relentless. Still not enough to keep me away from this place 🙂

Being a Minneapolis Newborn Photographer, I have maybe the best job ever. Capturing photos for families fulfills me. Yes, it’s fun to have these photos now to share with your friends and family. But the thought of you looking at these images 20 years from now, your children sharing their newborn/child/family photos with their children, THAT is what drives me. It’s not a responsibility I take lightly. Love, adore, cherish… all things I want to feel about the images from your session. Warm fuzzies required, always.

Here is a family you might recognize! We spent a gorgeous evening together last month capturing Maternity and Family photos. Little miss Luana made her arrival a couple weeks ago, and I finally got to meet her! First, let’s just talk about that hair! You all know I LOVE me some baby hair! And eyelashes for daaaaays!!!! She’s absolutely gorgeous. I can definitely see a resemblance to her big sister Nadia.  These girls are going to be heartbreakers one day 🙂

I used to be intimidated at the thought of doing sibling photos during a session.  Toddlers and young children can be very difficult to work. Asking a little tike to stay in a posed position for a couple minutes is tough. It’s why I only do sessions for children older than 12 months outside. letting them run around is soooo much easier and natural! I would just assume that sibling photos during a newborn session would more than likely go very wrong. And they have in the past, but, I’ve figured a few things out. Yes, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve now. Sibling photos, not so scary for this photog anymore. And it’s a good thing too because these end up being favorite photos from each newborn session that I capture them at. I know I melt everytime I look at the photo I took of Azria holding Renly as a newborn.

I hope you enjoy these photos! And I have to mention the gorgeous piece of handmade felt in the photo of Nadia & Luana. It’s made by Bobo Filc, go visit her website if your a photog looking for a fun new prop!
