Minneapolis Newborn Photographer

It’s that time of year again. Everyone has finally gotten into the swing of Summer, and is starting to think about having family and baby photos done while it’s still warm. I mean this is Minnesota, it’ll be snowing in about 5 minutes. I’m sure of it.

The warm weather means my schedule fills up a little quicker than usual. In any given month I might be booked up only two or three weeks in advance. When it’s warm out, my sessions book much faster. I typically schedule 2-3 baby/family/maternity sessions each Saturday (giving myself a weekend off once every three or four weeks),  and I schedule newborn sessions during the week. Right now, my schedule for Saturdays are full through mid October, with the exception of  1 opening in September. That may sound crazy, but like I mentioned we don’t have this gorgeous weather for very long in Minnesota, so I only book family sessions from the end of May through end of October. Sometimes we get lucky and will get a great Saturday in the 50’s in November, and then you can usually talk me into a November outdoor session.

I also don’t like to take on more than five newborn sessions per month. I never know when a baby will be born, and with only a couple weekdays available for newborn sessions, I have to make sure I can get all those newborns photographed before they get too old. And by “old” I mean 14 days or older 🙂 While I rarely have to turn down a newborn session because my schedule is already full, I foresee this happening over the next 6 months.  I already have at least 2 newborns scheduled for everyone between now and January. I’ve had an absolutely crazy amount of inquiries the past few weeks, and it just doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Not a bad thing at all! But, it can be for you if you wait too long to contact me about scheduling your session. I absolutely hate saying “No” to inquiries, but in order to keep some sort of work-life balance I have to.

So this is my long winded warning. If you’ve been thinking about schedule a session but haven’t because you’ve been busy with other things, don’t put it off for another minute. Click the Contact link on my menu bar and send me an email.

The maternity session. Not a session that every expecting mommy can see herself doing. I think my maternity clients are pretty brave. I admire their ability to step in front of a camera with confidence when many would feel anything but photogenic. I sure wouldn’t have felt comfortable having photos taken of me when I was pregnant with my daughter.  I was a walking water balloon. I gained so much water weight when I was pregnant with her, I mean it was just ridiculous. I had that super creepy pitting edema  in my feet. Cute was the last thing I felt.

With my son, I still gained weight of course, but I felt more comfortable. I’m lucky to have a great friend who did my maternity photos for me. I love, cherish, adore them. It made me realize… while I may not have felt super confident in my first pregnancy, I wish I had taken maternity photos. What I looked like didn’t matter. Why I love capturing maternity photos for clients, and why I should have had them done for me, is to capture all the emotions during this brief time in life. The anticipation, anxiety, and excitement of a new beginning. You’ve never met your baby, have yet to see their precious smile, yet you love them unconditionally. Just imagine for a moment, 10, 15, 20+ years from now showing your child these photos. How crazy special will that be?! My oldest, Azria, has already started asking for me to tell stories of when she was in my belly. I have a few photos to share with her, and my gosh does it make her so happy. That’s what it’s all about.  If you’re thinking about having maternity photos done for yourself, just do it. I promise, you won’t regret it.

If you’ve had a newborn session with me, you know that before your session I make sure we talk on the phone about your session. I like to make sure you  have a good idea in your mind of exactly what will happen at your session. It’s also important that you know exactly how to prepare. A lot of this information can be found on my Newborn Session Details page also.

At the end of our call I like to talk about styling for your session. I prefer to use mostly neutral colors… browns, creams, greys; with the occasional bit of color. To me, neutral tones are timeless, and flattering for almost any skin tone. These gentle colors keep the focus on baby. I always ask clients for input into their session. If you have a certain color you would like me to incorporate, or maybe one that you want me to avoid using. And I also ask about poses too… if you have a favorite, or even one you don’t like.

While I welcome some input into the styling of your session, I think my absolute favorite response is none. That you want me to do whatever I’m inspired to do, because you love my work and trust me. Seriously, it makes my day. And I’m lucky that almost all my sessions are like that.

Mr. Carter’s session is an example of a session that I had full control of styling and planning. I was able to easily select poses, props, blankets and hats that would work together cohesively.  It was also hugely helpful that he was a very sleepy little babe for me 🙂 I love these photos soooo much, and I hope you enjoy them as well!
